In Hiroshima, ‘‘contemporary" means post-atomic bomb. For a city which has eradicated its pre-war history, the term "contemporary" has a particular depth or meaning, forging a link between art and peace which might be difficult for any other city to establish.Hiroshima‘s development is guided by its identity as a city of international peace; indeed, other than its geographic location on a delta it has little else to build an identity on. Consequently, this project is very important to the city.The site, atop a 50-meter-high hill, is part of a precinct referred to as the Hijiyama Art Park. The master plan for this precinct was also undertaken by Kurokawa. In addition to the art museums are a sculpture park, outdoor school, open areas, and nature walks. There are also plans for a natural history museum and library. The whole site is surrounded by primeval forest and is completely shut off from the noise of the city.
